You could take a Greyhound, if that's how you roll or if you just want to take your time for the adventure. But at less than 150 miles, a run to Lake County is a modest road trip distance that allows you to pack your getaway with time on the water or trail, where you mean to be.

The most direct route is to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and run Highway 101 north until you need the turn east on Highway 175 at Hopland. That carries you most of the way there.

If you want to cross the Bay to Oakland and drive Interstate 80 to Interstate 505 and take the more inland route, it will only cost you a few more minutes.

Maybe consider making a loop and try both routes for scenic variety.

A third option, if a little slower and with tolls, takes you off I-80 at Vallejo for a turn north through Napa. Stop for a wine tasting and lunch or just see what all the noise about Napa is, if it's new to you.
